NEW GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY

Privacy and terms.

What this site collects, what we do with it, and the terms on which you use it. Short, because there is not much to say: we count visits, which you can turn off, and otherwise hold only what you give us.

Who we are

This site is run by House of Ideas Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, trading as New Geo, the New Geographical Society. Questions about anything on this page: contact@newgeo.org.

What we collect

Only what you give us. When you write to us or join the Field Notes through a form on this site, we receive your name where the form asks for it, your email address, and whatever you write in the box. Nothing else is asked for. Before a form sends, a check by Cloudflare (its Turnstile service) tells a person from a script, from your internet address and the signals your browser gives; it never sees what you typed, and most people never notice it.

We also count visits, so we know which pages are read. Google Analytics records the pages you open, the site that sent you, the kind of device and browser, and the town or region your internet address points to (Google does not keep the address itself), and sets its own cookies, named _ga and _ga_5QF1J1HDNJ, to tell a returning visit from a new one. Google keeps these detailed records for two months; we look only at the totals built from them, not at any one visitor. We have turned off Google’s advertising features, so the counts are not used to build an advertising profile of you or to follow you to other sites. We do this in our legitimate interest in knowing what is read, and you can turn it off at any time (see Cookies, below).

Like every website, ours is served by a hosting company, Netlify, whose servers keep the ordinary technical record of a visit (an internet address, a page, a time) for a short period, for security and to keep the site running.

What we do with it

A message goes to Chris, who reads it and replies. An email address you give to join the Field Notes goes into our mailing-list service, Kit, which asks you to confirm your address and then sends the notes. Every note carries a link to leave the list, and leaving removes your address from it.

We never sell, rent or share your name or address. The only companies that handle your details on our behalf are Netlify, which serves the site and passes on what you send through a form; Resend, which delivers a message to Chris’s inbox; Kit, which holds the list and keeps a record of each message; Google, which counts visits and never receives your name or email address; and Cloudflare, which checks that a form was sent by a person and never receives what you wrote. Each is bound by its own privacy terms and by contract with us. All five are American companies, so your details may be processed in the United States, under the safeguards UK data-protection law requires for such transfers.

We keep your address for as long as you are on the list, and a message for as long as the conversation it started. If you would like to know what we hold about you, or have it corrected or deleted, write to contact@newgeo.org and we will do so within a month.

Cookies and other people’s players

The only cookies this site sets are Google Analytics’s, to count visits as described above. Some pages embed films hosted on Vimeo; when you play one, Vimeo may set its own cookies under its own privacy terms. The podcast recordings play from our own storage at media.newgeo.org, which sets no cookies. Links that leave the site, to Substack, LinkedIn, Amazon or Spotify, take you to services with their own policies.

You can turn visit counting off here at any time, and it stays off in this browser until you turn it back on. It is off already if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal. With JavaScript off, nothing is counted.

Your rights

If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Union, data-protection law gives you the right to see the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to object to its use, and to complain to a regulator (in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office). We would rather hear from you first: contact@newgeo.org.

This site is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect their details.

Terms of use

Everything on this site is written, drawn or filmed by Chris Kutarna or made for New Geo, unless it says otherwise, and belongs to House of Ideas Ltd or to the people credited. You are welcome to quote from it with attribution and a link. Please ask before reproducing an essay, a drawing or a film in full.

The site is offered as it is. We take care to be accurate and to keep it working, but we make no promise that it will always be available or free of error, and we are not responsible for the sites we link to. Nothing here is professional advice; it is one person thinking out loud.

These terms and this policy are governed by the law of England and Wales. We may change them; the date below says when we last did, and a change applies from the day it is published.
